PDU
What Is a PDU?
A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is designed to distribute electric power to multiple devices. While these systems can’t produce power, they distribute ensuring that devices maintain access to a reliable power network. In other words, when you have several devices that need to be plugged into your power source, these units will allow you to transform an input into several different power outputs.
Most commonly used in industrial settings, network closets, and data centers, PDUs deliver either AC or DC power. This power can be drawn from systems such as generators or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Once the system draws power, it then serves as a source for devices ranging from servers to switches.
Similar to a power strip, some PDUs offer surge protection as well as the ability to run efficient networks.
Types of PDUs
Because everything from telecommunications equipment to power servers can have different needs and requirements, there are several different PDU solutions available.
Two of the most common types of PDUs are switched and metered. While both switched and metered PDUs deliver network-grade power distribution, a switched unit offers a few additional benefits, such as outlet control and remote monitoring. Power distribution units also come in AC and DC models. This option enables facilities to easily meet the specific power requirements of different sites.
When to Purchase New PDU Equipment
If your business is faced with the decision of either buying new power distribution units or repairing what you already own, there are several factors to consider. In general, once PDU equipment reaches a certain age, replacing components or repairing the system often involves more time and money than it’s worth. Many of the components may be out of date or not advanced enough to support modern needs, making a new PDU a much smarter investment.
Several other factors can warrant purchasing a new unit. For example, if you have already reached the capacity limit on your breaker panel or often find yourself dealing with insufficient power, you won’t have enough energy for your business to perform at its peak. To operate efficiently, you’ll most likely need to purchase a new power distribution unit.
